Gina P. Carter-Simmers
A native of Alabama, Gina Carter-Simmers is general manager of Jackson State University's "Cool and Current" WJSU-FM 88.5. She has worked in public radio and television for more than two decades. Her passion for public broadcasting has taken her to WUAL Radio at the University of Alabama, KRWG Radio in New Mexico, Public Broadcasting Atlanta in Georgia and the statewide Alabama Public Television Network in Birmingham. She is the first African American named as the network’s membership director, leading fund-raising efforts for a 32,000-plus membership base.
Carter-Simmers is an award-winning producer. Her most recent radio project, "Listen Up," won a 2015 Best Feature Award from the Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters. Her 2016, 15-part series, "Profiles in Women's History" was distributed nationally through the African American Public Radio Consortium. She is also a nationally recognized figure in the jazz world as the 2010 and 2015 JazzWeek nominee for Programmer of the Year in the 80-plus markets category.
